Disney+ Review: Hamilton

On July 3rd, the “ten-dollar founding father” made his way onto Disney+, just in time for the 4th of July. That’s right, I’m talking about the smash-hit musical Hamilton! Hamilton is telling the story of Alexander Hamilton, from his arrival to America to the American Revolution, to the start of the free country. For those who don’t know, this musical changed the definition of Broadway by introducing rap to the theater world. It was incredibly successful, taking the stage by storm. Now, you can watch this musical in your living room!

The recording was made in June of 2016 from the Richard Rogers Theater on Broadway. It also includes the original cast who originated all the roles when the musical first opened in 2015. The show was written by Lin-Manuel Miranda (who also originated the role of Hamilton and plays him in the recording), and he truly created a work of art. Everything in the show is there for a reason and he thought everything through down to the last detail. Honestly, it feels like Disney quality to me which is why I think they wanted it for their streaming service.

Now, onto a quick spoiler-free plot synopsis. The show starts with Hamilton first meeting another important character, Aaron Burr. They soon become friends and we learn Hamilton has big plans for his life and wants to leave a legacy. The rest of act one takes you through the American revolution, him falling in love, and the U.S. winning the war. Act two is all about the birth of the new country and the development of the government, all following Hamilton’s role.

The recording is very unique because the camera makes you look at specific points, which isn’t as easy in live theater. This is a good and bad thing- good because you can get good views or close-ups as well as not miss the most important things but bad because you can’t see the little details you could be watching it in a theater seeing the whole stage. Overall, the recording did a very good job showing what you need to see.

Amanda's Hamilton Collection

As you may be able to tell, I am a huge Hamilton and musical theater fan. I was lucky enough to see the National Hamilton Tour in 2017 and listen to the music constantly. Having seen it both live and the recording twice, I can say with confidence they are both special experiences. I love the recording now and think they did a wonderful job capturing the essence of the show. But then again, there is something special about seeing it live. Despite this, I think the recording on Disney+ is great.

For anyone who has Disney+, I recommend you watch it if you like history, rap, or theater. This show truly is so iconic so if you like at least one of these, why not try watching it. There’s no harm in watching thirty minutes and then deciding you don’t like it. I don’t like rap but I love the revolutionary period and theater and tried listening to the music when it first came out. I immediately fell in love. Hamilton is not for everyone, but if you have any interest at all, go watch it and find out “who lives, who dies, and who tells your story”.
